Apart What was your first electronic music experience and how old were you?
X The Owl What changed it all for me was hearing Ministry – “Stigmata” for the first time when I was 11 years old. I was always a big fan of 80’s pop growing up, and I guess you could call that electronic music, but that early Industrial Metal is what drew me in.
Apart What’s your preferred genre(s) of EDM you like to listen to?
X The Owl I pretty much live on a steady diet of house music, as that’s what I spin. I’ll listen to some techno and drum & bass every now and then, but I’m probably a househead for life at this point.
Apart What’s one of your favorite tracks of all time?
X The Owl “The Phoenix” by God Within (Scott Hardkiss). It features a sample from ELO – “Fire On High” which sounds great over a breakbeat. I heard it for the first time back at one of the Even Further parties in the late 90’s, and it was just one of those moments…
Apart If you’re not listening to electronic music, what are you listening to?
X The Owl Pretty rare, but I would say punk, indie rock, indie pop, and some metal. NOFX is probably my favorite band, if I had to pick one. Portugal The Man is also outstanding as well, when I need a break from boots & cats.
Apart Are there any specific Milwaukee or Wisconsin events/clubs that have stood out and made a memorable impression on you (past or present)?
X The Owl There’s been a lot of memorable nights over the past year Thursdays at Crave, Fridays at Taste It, and Saturday nights at Carte Blanche. Some of the parties on the patio at Studio 200 last summer were magical. The last event that sticks out in my mind is Turned On 2 back in 2000 in Madison. I’m not sure if we’ll ever see a lineup like that again for a party in Wisconsin. But if I win the lottery, I’m throwing a Turned On 3.
